What are Full Dentures?

A full denture is made up of two parts. The denture base and artificial teeth. We make the base from an acrylic material that resembles the color of gums and soft tissue.

Each patient will have their own unique dental anatomy. Hence, each newly made set of dentures is customized for a patient-specific fit. These function as removable replacements for missing teeth.

Patients who have completely lost all teeth in their upper, lower or both jaws are candidates for full dentures. Usually, these are patients that have had significant oral health problems like severely carious teeth and periodontal disease. These entail removal of several or even all teeth to ensure good oral health.

Types of Full Dentures

At Dentures 4 You, we offer two kinds of complete dentures depending on your needs.

  1. Immediate Dentures
We make this option available for patients who will undergo tooth/teeth extraction that will leave them toothless. We call them “immediate” because we place these dentures right after the extraction for the patient’s convenience during the healing process of the soft tissues and bone.

It is important to note that these dentures are temporary. The bone and soft tissues will begin recession once teeth are lost. This means that immediate dentures will become loose after 2-3 months, once the gums have healed already. After this timeframe, you can shift to getting conventional dentures.

  2. Conventional Dentures
When gums and bone have completely healed, conventional dentures become your semi-permanent replacement to natural teeth. We say semi-permanent because dentures will still need to be assessed year after year. They may need to get replaced every 7-10 years depending on structural changes and patient compliance.

We make these dentures from more accurate 3D Digital Scans or impressions and quality materials. We work hard to guarantee that you can comfortably wear these for years to come.

Why do we need full dentures?

The oral cavity is a complex system that not only consists of teeth. It is also made up of bone, ligaments, and gums, or soft tissues. Altogether, they function as one system. When teeth are lost, because of whatever reason, it affects all the other parts of the system which can cause these problems:

  1. Difficulty in eating
  2. Speech impediments
  3. Digestive problems
  4. Headaches
  5. Aged appearance
  6. Confidence issues

After losing their natural teeth, patients cite the following as their most common concerns: (1) dissatisfaction during meals; (2) difficulty chewing leading to nutritional issues; and (3) a loss of confidence stemming from an altered appearance.

Dentures can bring back function and give you back your lost smile. Patients regain the ability to eat without difficulty, speak with proper pronunciation, and flash a winning smile for all to see. With much of the technological advancements available today, dentures can have that usual appearance for a natural-looking smile. These same innovations also allow us to tailor the dentures to your anatomy and face size to restore the natural function as if you had your original teeth.

How do I take care of dentures?

Artificial teeth such as dentures require as much regular maintenance as natural teeth. Our mouths are a haven for different microorganisms. Your dentures can also get buildup of plaque and calculus, thus cleaning them daily is a MUST.

The use of cleaning solutions is an important co-management to maintain your dentures. You should soak your dentures in cleaning solution every night. This prevents the dentures from drying out, which can cause discomfort for you when you use it.

Be mindful when handling dentures to avoid any damage to the material. Try your best to avoid dropping or stepping on them. If it cracks or a tooth falls off for any reason, we urge you to bring them to our clinic so we can repair them with professional-grade equipment. Avoid using any household or office supplies to repair them yourself as these may be toxic and cause more damage.

Make it a habit to remove dentures at night. You run the risk of accidentally swallowing your dentures if you go to bed with them. Place them in a proper container by your bedside instead.

Furthermore, we recommend you visit us at least once a year for us to check your dentures and the status of your soft tissues and bone. We can adjust the dentures according to the changes and we can also assess if yours need replacement.

Will my Dentures Last Forever?

Dentures don’t last forever. We do our best to provide the best for our patients, but your dentures will also need replacement after a good number of years. We do this to address any changes in bone and soft tissue. Denture require replacement due the wear of the teeth.

What are Alternatives to Full Dentures?

Depending on the remaining bone structure, an excellent alternative for full dentures are implant-retained dentures. In that regard, let us to assess your case so we can provide you with all available options to best tackle your needs.
